DDN staff pages -- who's who at DDN Although we don't currently make author pages for the library intranet (because they are not needed), it would not be difficult to create them for our most high-profile people. The page at left is an example of how I would handle author pages. It has a short bio of Tom Archdeacon, how to contact him, and a customized search form which searches only his byline file. Visitors to our website should be able to find such pages on all of our most prominent people -- the columnists, section editors, critics and senior editors. For people like Ann Heller we could have a search form which only looks at recipes. Dave Larson's would have a search form for movies. For Hap Cawood and his people we could have search forms to zero in on Editorial and Op/Ed content.
| Use of images within the archive: One innovation we've made in our home archive is the introduction of selected images with stories. This is different from just putting pictures on a web page because these stories are actually in the archive database. When someone searches our in-house system through a browser the story is pulled from the database and converted it to HTML on the fly. The system we use was designed to be text-only, but I discovered I could hide HTML image code in custom-made fields so when the story displays it finds the image in another directory. We've handle all infographics this way for nearly a year, but have not yet done much with photos. But the Taylor example at left shows what a dramatic difference it can make. With columnists (see sample below), the mug was only inserted once and all columns point to it. FYI, Infonautics is not yet able to replicate this, but they're rebuilding their "architecture" and seem eager to include some of my ideas. They plan to have their new structure in place by August. As part of that change we'd also be able to place links within a document to it's sidebars or related stories. | - Next Page -
