Though his parents were ofmodest means, all of their 10 children went to college. In 1944, Cooper becameone of the first black officers in the Navy. He came to Dayton in the 1950sand began working for the city government. He currently lives in Centerville.Ellen Lee Jackson, 87 Born in Dayton, she also lived in Detroit and Kentucky as a girl, but droppedout of school to return to Ohio and care for an ailing brother. She went on towork in a clothing store and as a cafeteria director. After living inTennessee for 28 years, she came back to the Miami Valley in 1994 and moved inwith her brother in Jefferson Twp.Yvonne Walker-Taylor, 82 A minister's only child, Walker-Taylor was born in New Bedford, Mass. She alsolived in Raleigh, N.C., and Cleveland as a girl, and enjoyed a privilegedlife. After earning a master's degree, she taught at Wilberforce Universityand eventually became its president. She still lives in Wilberforce.Ned Wood, 85 He grew up on a small farm in Aragon, Ga., where he got a seventh-gradeeducation in a one-room schoolhouse. He came to the Dayton area in 1936 tolook for work. He found a job at the Fridgidaire plant, and except for an18-month Army stint during World War II, stayed there until retirement. Hecurrently lives in Dayton. |
