Lars Nyberg --
CEO of NCR Corp.

On June 1, 1995 Lars Nyberg, a native Swede who had spent his entire career in Europe, became chairman of what was then called "AT&T Global Information Solutions" -- the once and future NCR Corp.   After authorizing painful job cuts within a few months of his arrival, Nyberg presided over the rebirth of NCR, both in name and financial stability.

Born: Dec. 7, 1951 in Sweden.
Family: Married with four children. Two are grown and a third, as of 1997, was in boarding school in Sweden. The youngest, a boy, attended Miami Valley School.
Title: chairman and chief executive.
His first day in the job was June 1, 1995.
Previous employment: 20 years at European electronics giant Philips NV.
Compensation: In 1996 Nyberg was paid $3.7 million. Of that, $1.9 million was a year-end, lump-sum payment in lieu of special pension benefits Nyberg would have received had heremained employed by AT&T. (NCR became independent of AT&T at the end of 1996 through a planned "spinoff.")
   Nyberg's employment contract calls for him to receive a $3.8million bonus in June 1999 if he is still leading the company and a $2 millionsigning bonus if he receives and accepts a contract extension that year.
