Duane L. Erwin can scratch the word "interim" from his job title.

Erwin on Monday was named the new chief executive officer of Franciscan Medical Center's Dayton Campus. He succeeds James Strieby, who resigned abruptly Sept. 29, citing undisclosed personal reasons.

Erwin, 49, has served on the Franciscan staff since 1989. Most recently he was the vice president of administration for the system's $150 million, acute-care operations in Cincinnati.

When Erwin was appointed interim CEO immediately following Strieby's resignation, Dayton employees received a notice that said no applications were being taken for the permanent CEO position.

"The past one month and one week have been tremendously exciting," Erwin said. "I feel like I really have been welcomed into the organization."

Erwin said he has spent the past few weeks meeting with employees, especially the medical staff. He also has been busy listening to employees' concerns and identifying additional opportunities for Franciscan.

Erwin has a reputation for expanding the Franciscan system's free-standing satellite facilities and lowering costs when he was administration vice president for Franciscan's sister hospitals, the Western Hills and Mount Airy campuses of Franciscan Hospital, in Cincinnati.

He welcomes the opportunity to return to Dayton, and acknowledges the challenges he and his staff will face.

"We have to (deal with) how to respond to challenges of the MedCath facility coming into town," Erwin said, in reference to the heart-care center MedCath Corp. plans to build in suburban Dayton. The center is poised to become a threat to Franciscan's fast-growing heart program. "These are challenges for the entire community. How do we respond to those issues?"
