Crime and law enforcement stories of 1998:

2 die in line of duty

-- A Centerville police officer and a Washington Twp firefighter were killed in the line of duty on Jan. 12, 1998 when they were struck by a car while investigating an accident on an icy stretch of I-675.

Crime and law enforcement stories of 1997:

Trooper shot

-- State Highway Patrol trooper Angela R. Watson was shot by a hitchhiker on I-70 in Preble County. Watson, who was wearing a bulletproof vest and not seriously injured, returned fire and the hitchhiker was killed. A medical exam determined he killed himself with a shot to the head after being wounded by Watson.

Missing children

-- Two Champaign County children disappeared from their home on July 9, 1997.

Sunoco Mini Mart murder

-- Teenagers Brian Singleton and Joseph Agee were charged with the April 3, 1997 murder of convenience store manager Margaret T. Chain.

Triple-homicide in arson

-- Ivory Franklin and two family members died in a fire investigators labeled arson. A teenage grandson was charged.

The Wilmington shootout

-- the four-month manhunt for Chevie and Cheyne Kehoe.

  Huber Heights pair imprisoned for 11 years for a crime that may never have occurred.

Rebecca Hopfer
  Teenager convicted of killing her newborn

  Six people killed in a 3-day rampage which began on Christmas eve.

  A 14-year-old Oakwood girl was kidnapped and murdered by a serial killer.
