The third of four defendants in what authorities claimed was a Daytonpolice-based drug ring pleaded guilty Friday to a charge of engaging in apattern of corrupt activity. Judge Barbara Gorman of Montgomery County Common Pleas Court grantedprobation to Sean Orlando Pauley after he serves an 18-month sentence for twounrelated convictions on drug abuse charges. If Pauley fails probation, he faces a sentence of 6-to-25 years in prison. Prosecutors dropped a second charge of racketeering and two counts ofconspiracy to commit aggravated drug trafficking that had been brought againstPauley and his three co-defendants in June 1995. Pauley, 21, the only one of four defendants who was not a police officer,is the cousin of suspended Dayton Police officer Dineah Childs, who faces thesame four charges and is scheduled to be tried April 22. Mrs. Childs is thewife of Charles F. Childs, 38. In August, a jury convicted Charles F. Childs of drug traffickingconspiracy. In November, he pleaded no contest and was found guilty ofaggravated trafficking and possession of a counterfeit controlled substance. Gorman sentenced Charles F. Childs to 30 months in prison, but he receivedcredit for the months he had spent awaiting trial in jail. He was releasedDec. 12 and has not been reinstated to the police department. A jury found Childs' bike patrol partner, William Eric Bailey, 30, notguilty on all charges, and he returned to work for the police department.
