The Associated Press and other national news organizations compiled lists based on what was known at the time. People who worked in the towers and whose families reported them missing were included, and some were accidentally listed twice. The final tally would be 2,753 dead in New York, 184 at the Pentagon and 40 on the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania.
