Jules Goux

French driver Jules Goux was part of the Peugeot team that came to Indianapolis for the first time in 1913 and that year Goux was the winner.

According to newspaper accounts at the time, Goux called for champagne during each of his four pit stops and a local restaurateur had been recruited to supply it. Goux was said to have downed several bottles during the six-and-a-half-hour race, but according to 500 historian Donald Davidson the actual amount he consumed was likely minimal. In any case, the AAA wisely established a no alcohol rule afterwards.

The handsome Frenchman was also a hit with female fans, receiving numerous fan letters from Indiana girls during his stay. He competed at Indianapolis four more times, the last in 1922.
