1948

For the second year in a row, the Blue Crown front-wheel-drive cars owned by Lou Moore finished 1-2 at the Speedway with Mauri Rose again edging out teammate Bill Holland.

During practice, Ralph Hepburn -- who had replaced Cliff Bergere on the Novi team -- was killed instantly when he crashed in the north chute, slamming head-on into the wall.

Moore started out as a driver and was second to Louie Meyer in the 1928 500. He retired in 1937 and found quick success as an owner and car builder when Floyd Roberts won the 1938 500. Moore won again in 1941 with Rose and Floyd Davis sharing the driving, then won three in a row from 1947-49.
