1914

If the 1913 Indianapolis 500 had been disappointing for fans of American cars, 1914 was worse. Not only did another Frenchman win -- this time it was Rene Thomas -- but the Peugeots had dominated the race in nearly every respect. Of the six cars that made it the full distance, only one was American -- an Indianapolis Stutz driven by popular driver Barney Oldfield.

The Frenchmen also bested Joe Dawson's 1912 speed record, and Dawson himself was badly injured when his car turned over on the 41st lap. He recovered, but his racing days were over.

It was also the first 500 for a young driver named Eddie Richenbacher and a car called a Duesenberg.
