East Chicago police officer Sgt. William Patrick O'Malley, 43, was waiting outside the door of the First National Bank of East Chicago when Dillinger and John Hamilton emerged surrounded by hostages. O'Malley saw an opportunity to take out Dillinger and fired several shots into his chest. But Dillinger was wearing a steel vest under his suit. Witnesses said Dillinger pointed his Thompson submachine gun at O'Malley, said "you asked for it," and gunned him down.
