Ralph Underhill

  Ralph Underhill was head basketball coach at Wright State University for 18 years before he was fired on Nov. 15, 1996, four days after his arrest for shoplifting vitamins at a Meijer store in Beavercreek.
  At his March 1997 trial Underhill said he'd taken the vitamins by mistake. The jury deadlocked and a mistrial was declared.
  On Jan 16, 1997 Underhill filed a $1.78 million lawsuit against the university, claiming breach of contract. His last contract, signed in February 1996, called for him toearn a base salary of $75,000 a year through June 30, 1998.
   On Oct. 20, 1997 WSU released terms of a $125,000 settlement with Underhill. As part of the settlement, WSU president Harley Flack signed a letter acknowledging Underhill's accomplishments as a coach.

Education: Graduated from Lloyd High School in Erlanger, Ky. , where he won four letters each in football, basketball, track and baseball. He earned a degree at Tennessee Tech in 1964 . In college he played basketball and ran track.
Career:
1965-71, as coach of Ohio County High School in Hartford, Ky. he won 126 of 156 games, four regional titles and had oneteam finish as state runner-up
1972 -- guided Louisville Manual High School to a 24-6 record and berth in the Kentucky state tournament.
1972-77, assistant coach at Tennessee-Chattanooga, where he helped the Moccasins to a record of 125-48 and an NCAA Division II national championship in 1977.
1978-1996, head coach at Wright State. Hired as WSU's third head coach on May 18, 1978, Underhill guided the Raidersfor 18 seasons to a 356-162 record and .648 winning percentage. He had 16 winning seasons, including 10 with 20 or more victories. He also took the Raiders to the1983 NCAA Division II national title and a berth in the 1993 NCAA Division I tournament.
