Jeraldyne Blunden (1940 -)
founder and director of the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company
During those summers, she went to New York, auditioning for dance companies and off-Broadway shows.In the late 1950s she came back to Dayton, married, and began teaching full-time. By 1961, her classes developed into Jeraldyne's School of the Dance.
Jeraldyne Blunden is the founder and director of the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, an internationally- known modern dance troupe.

In 1994 she received a $320,000 MacArthur Foundation fellowship in recognition of her achievements in the arts, and in 1998 she was selected for a Dance Magazine award.
Born Jeraldyne Kilborn on Dec. 10, 1940, she grew up in the De Soto Bass Courts projects on Germantown Pike where her father was a maintenance man.At age seven she began dancing at the Linden Recreation Center where Dayton Ballet founders Josephine and Hermene Schwarz held balletclasses..
While still in high school, she took over the Schwarzes' Linden Center classes and began teaching modern dance. She spent summers at the Connecticut College Summer School of Dance, where she took classes with Martha Graham.
As her students progressed, Blunden realized they could develop into a professional modern dance company rooted in African-American tradition. This became the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company.
