On July 27, 1997 Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper Angela R. Watson, 26, was shot along Interstate 70 in Preble County after she stopped to question a hitchhiker.
According to the patrol the hitchhiker, identified as George M. Snyder, fired several shots at her with a .44 handgun.
Watson returned fire and Snyder was killed. Although initial reports assumed Watson fired the shot that killed Snyder, medical examiners later determined that Snyder killed himself with a shot to the head after having been wounded by Watson.
