Police officer deaths in the line of duty:

The Grossnickle-Cleaver shooting

  On 5-23-96 two Dayton police officers were shot outside the entrance of Third District police headquarters at the Roosevelt Center. One of the officers, Jason Grossnickle, was killed.
   The other, Robert Cleaver, was shot in the jaw and was able to return fire. He and other officer on the scene shot the assailant, later identified as Maurice Fareed. He died later at the hospital.

  According to witnesses Fareed had moments before killed a delivery- man at Diouf's Market 373 Antietam Ave., where he worked.
   He then drove away in the driver's van and appeared minutes later at the police station.

Sequence of events:

3:15 p.m.: Dayton police receive a call about a shooting in the 300 blockof Antietam Avenue.
3:20 p.m.: As a group of Dayton police officers is on the way into the Dayton Police Department's Third District headquarters at the Roosevelt Center, a man driving a small truck pulls up and starts shooting, hitting Officers Robert Cleaver and Jason Grossnickle. Officers return fire, hitting the suspect.
3:39 p.m.: Cleaver, shot in the jaw, arrives at Miami Valley Hospital. Heis alert, and able to talk. Hospital officials say his wounds are not life-threatening. Grossnickle is taken to St. Elizabeth Medical Center.
4:14 p.m.: Grossnickle is pronounced dead.
4:20 p.m.: A homicide detective and a half-dozen Dayton Fire Department paramedics exit grim-faced from the St. Elizabeth emergency room.
4:45 p.m.: Grossnickle's mother, grandmother and girlfriend arrive at thehospital.
4:50 p.m.: An officer shows up at Third District Headquarters wearing a black band over his badge, signifying mourning.
5:25 p.m.: A man who identifies himself as a peer counselor from the Montgomery County sheriff's office arrives at Third District Headquarters and tells an officer, "The chaplain is on his way."
5:30 p.m.: The 23-year-old suspect, shot five times, is pronounced dead at Good Samaritan Medical Center.
6:07 p.m.: Dayton Police Chief Ronald Lowe announces that Grossnickle hasdied.

The victims:

KILLED - Jason "Jake" Grossnickle, 25, was a third-generation police officer. He was the son of Sgt. Larry Grossnickle and the grand-son of Lyle Grossnickle.

WOUNDED - Robert Cleaver, 29, became a police recruit with Grossnickle in August 1995. In February 1996 he became a patrol officer and was assigned to the Third District.

KILLED - Brian Catron, 31, of Middletown, had been driving the delivery truck for only four weeks before the shooting. Friends said he had recently put his life together after battling alcoholism.

The gunman:

KILLED - Maurice Fareed, 24, formerly Maurice Cannon, worked at the market owned by his mother and step-father. His mother said he ad emotional problems and was disillusioned about the fate of the black race.
